Peter Hyson, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Disease at the University of Vermont (UVM) Larner College of Medicine. Dr. Hyson is a clinician-scientist with a combined focus on patient care and laboratory-based research in infectious diseases. He is affiliated with the UVM & State Agricultural College.

Dr. Hyson’s research focuses on babesiosis, an emerging tick-borne illness caused by Babesia parasites. His laboratory works within the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at UVM, where he investigates new approaches to developing more effective treatments for this increasingly prevalent infection that affects both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients.

Dr. Hyson is a member of the NIH-funded Translational and Global Infectious Diseases Research Center (TGIR-COBRE) at UVM, which supports junior faculty in building careers in global health and infectious disease research. He is the 2026 Bay Area Lyme Foundation Tick-Borne Pathogen Emerging Leader Award winner.
