Dr. Brandon Jutras was an internationally recognized microbiologist whose groundbreaking research advanced our understanding of Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. His work focused on uncovering the molecular mechanisms that enable the bacterium to cause infection and inflammation, to develop better diagnostics and treatments for patients. His pioneering work contributed to major discoveries about the role of bacterial peptidoglycan in persistent inflammation and Lyme arthritis, opening new avenues for understanding disease pathogenesis and improving diagnosis.
With over 40 peer-reviewed publications in many of science’s top journals, Dr. Jutras used a diverse array of atomic, molecular, and cellular tools to diagnose, understand, and treat Lyme disease. His approach challenged paradigms in bacterial physiology, and his research group leveraged their findings to improve the overall welfare of humans and animals.
Dr. Jutras earned his PhD in Microbiology from the College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky. His innovative diagnostic project was selected for a 2021 Emerging Leader Award, a $100,000 grant. Dr. Jutras’s lab won Phase 3 of the LymeX Diagnostics Prize for an innovative Lyme disease test using monoclonal antibodies and immuno-PCR.

Brandon’s curiosity, creativity, and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of people affected by Lyme disease made him one of the field’s most respected and admired investigators. His groundbreaking discoveries, generous mentorship, and collaborative spirit leave a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire the Lyme disease research community for years to come. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, family, friends, students, and colleagues. He will be greatly missed by the entire Lyme community.
